Has it ever happened to you that you’re constantly hearing or reading about this one thing but somehow you’re the only person who doesn’t know what they’re all talking about? Yea, I’ve been there many times one of which has happened recently. I’ve been seeing this Potash Corp and and BHP story in the news for a while now and the one thing my mind keeps asking me is “What in the world is potash?” So like my many other “lost” moments, I began to research.
After reading a few things online and skipping through a couple of chemical terms and jargon, I’ve condensed a simpler definition. Ready folks? So potash basically comes in a rock form and is made up of potassium salts. The rock is mined and then refined so that the different potassium salts are separated to be used in various things like fertilizer, glass and soaps but most of it is used for fertilizer. Fun fact: the potassium from the potash is actually what makes some of your favourite fruits and vegetables fresh and sweet.
The debates and conversations surrounding the takeover are finally put into perspective now that I finally know what was being fought over. I can sleep in peace tonight and say to myself, “You are now potash-educated.” Yea, that’s right, I just made up a word.
