Community saves us again

Okay, so I went to this presentation recently by The Automatic Earth. It was all about the financial crisis that the presenter, Nicole Foss, believes is imminent. The presentation consisted of a lot of graphs and charts and numbers that basically point to a second great depression. The issue is hugely complicated and economist all around the world have different opinions; however, there was one point that really stuck with me about the presentation that I wanted to share.
Nicole kept saying that the best thing that we could do was to go home and start thinking about our community and how to make it stronger. She encouraged all of us to go talk to our neighbours that we didn’t know, to find places that community gardens could grow, to seek out others who would be willing to barter services and to turn our virtual communities into physical ones. The reasoning is that you can build a strong system of support that everyone in your community can rely on.
Whether or not there will be a second great depression I think the advice she gave is still very important. I don’t think imminent hard times should be the catalyst for building a strong community - we should strive for that everyday. So I am off to knock on some doors and introduce myself to my neighbourhood.
