Let’s Act our Age Canada

[I Blame You by Bart Everson on Flickr]

I have a confession to make: I’m addicted to reading the CBC website. I would come right out and tell all of you how many times I visit the website a day, but that would just be plain embarrassing, so I’ll leave it at that.

Anyone who has visited cbc.ca or any similar media outlet website will notice that there is a comment section, and man, these forums can be a hotbed of opinion sharing (both well informed and ignorant). While the well informed and well constructed comments can be extremely insightful, it’s the other type I want to focus on. These less savory types of comments are riddled with divisive language, viewing the Canadian federation with a wild west “us versus them” attitude, with claims being made that individual provinces have to look out for themselves.

Though we in Canada have a lot to be thankful for, we have some big issues to attend to. Climate change and foreign infringement on Northern Canadian territory threaten Canada as we know it. Our healthcare system, the pride and joy of Canada, needs some serious work. Our post-secondary institutions are suffering from years of deferred maintenance and tuition is becoming unbearable for many.

I agree that we have our differences but sheesh Canada, why don’t we focus on fixing problems rather than playing the blame game. We’re 143 years old and I think it’s time we began acting like an adult.
