AisB: What music are you listening to / art are you checking out these days?

Sarah: I listen to a lot of music, mostly right now i am listening to Four Tet, Pinback, the Supremes, Prince, Patsy Cline!
i'm reading a great book called "Then we came to the end" by Joshua Ferris. I just finished watching four seasons of the HBO show "The Wire" which I LOVED...and I look forward with great anticipation each week to "This American Life" on NPR.

Why should people, especially youth, vote?

It is truly an incredible privilege to vote. We take for granted our safety and our rights to do so in this country! Speaking your mind through voting is an honor, and forces you to figure out what kind of society you want to live in. Most people (youth) think government doesn't have anything to do with them! (which is crazy) People count on us to be misinformed or uneducated about politics. It’s so important to express your views by putting your confidence in a leader or political party!

For you, is there a connection between art and democracy? What is it?...

For you, is there a connection between art and democracy? What is it?

I think even in places where democracy does not exist, great art is being created. I feel so grateful for my freedom of speech here in Canada. i never worry about my opinions or art being censored. We can really make change and inspire people. But I do think that art is made even in the darkest of places!

Why do you care about community, when it is so easy not to?

I always felt like the community of people around me guided me to the place I am now. My family, friends, teachers and peers were so influential on my development as a person and as an artist. Also as a queer youth I needed the support of the gay community but also of queer allies! Community helps keep your head above water when things get difficult. I also find that the people Tegan and I tour with on the road, our band, our crew, the fans...these people create a community for us. i wouldn't be able to get by without out them!


What do you look for in a politician? What do you expect from your MP?

I love the power of speech. Words. Poetry. Inspiring people who can take your breath away or make you feel passionate or electric with their words! You don't find that often anymore sadly! I want to believe the person in power. You don't always have to agree with them but at the end of the day, much like a parent or educator, You hope that your human rights will always be respected. I need to know that my government will have my back if I need help.
