Ilona Dougherty was raised in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and Whitehorse, Yukon, and now lives in Montreal, Quebec.  Raised in a family that encouraged social activism, Ilona began her career as a concerned citizen at a young age. She was elected Chair of the

Canadian Environmental Network Youth Caucus at 14, and later went on to serve on the National Youth Roundtable on the Environment, Sierra Youth Coalition Executive Committee, & Sierra Club of Canada Board of  Directors. She was a co-founder of the Youth Environmental Network and a Canadian Delegate to the United Nations Commission on  Sustainable Development in 1997.

Realizing that her passion was equal in both environmentalism and the arts, Ilona completed a degree in Policy Studies and Contemporary Dance at Concordia University in 2003.  In January 2004 Ilona founded Apathy is Boring  (www.apathyisboring.com) a national non-partisan organization that  aims to use art, and technology to re-engage youth in the democratic  process, where she is currently the Executive Director.

Ilona has found as many ways as possible to mix art & activism, she has worked at such events as the Grey Cup, and the Juno Awards, and with artists  such as Melissa Auf Der Maur, Nelly Furtado, K’naan, Zaki Ibrahim, and many more. She was recently named one of five women changing the world by Canadian Dimensions Magazine, and was featured in the book “Notes from Canada’s Young Activists”.

Join us on Monday, March 10th for an intimate discussion of what it takes to fight apathy where it starts – with you!
