Manifesto, as part of the Global Hip Hop: 4 Elements Festival

When

11:40 AM July 28, 2007 - 11:40 AM July 29, 2007

Where

Harbourfront Centre, Toronto

In order to know where we’re going, we must know where we’ve been. In a world of rapidly narrowing attention spans where the commodification of hip hop culture has led to widespread commercially-motivated misrepresentations, developing strategies for preserving and passing down the history of a culture whose roots lie in empowerment, ingenuity, creativity, and positivity becomes increasingly vital.Recognizing this,Manifesto is working to both unearth our city’s rich cultural history and actively engage our youth in authentic and interactive representations of hip hop culture.

Manifesto is proud to be launching its workshop series in hip hop arts as part of Harbourfront Centre’s Global Hip Hop Festival, led by some of our city’s finest and most accomplished artists in the arts of b-boying, graffiti, turntablism, and emceeing. Please join us in celebrating and sharing the hard-earned talents of our guest instructors, in nourishing the gifts our city’s young bright minds possess, and in our efforts to preserve the origins, essence, and spirit of what has become a truly global culture.

About Manifesto

Toronto is a city brimming with potential, yet too often dreams remain unrealized, talent goes unrecognized, and strong foundations for community building fail to take root. Manifesto is determined to change this, and is born out of the belief that we can create stronger opportunities by working collaboratively to create a powerful platform for exposure, and by sharing knowledge, experience, and expertise inter-generationally. In September 2007, Manifesto will present its first urban music and arts festival in Toronto. Our 4-day citywide program will be filled with a rich variety of events providing a cross-section of urban music and arts, beginning by paying respect to the roots of the culture and ending with imagining and planting seeds for its future. Manifesto is also a grassroots initiative designed to unite Toronto's urban music and arts community, to foster collaboration and cross-promotion, and to give back by involving youth in the process and by presenting a free workshop series in collaboration with a number of community organizations in the city.
