Protect the Ecological Integrity of Middle Island

Category: Animals & Environment

Deadline: October 31, 2007

The ecological integrity of Middle Island is under attack. This dynamic island ecosystem, a Lake Erie jewel and a haven for Carolinian wildlife of all kinds, is now being threatened by the very agency charged with its protection.

A proposal to micro-manage, impair and/or damage the island’s natural processes, in ways that will involve the lethal cull and disturbance of its wildlife, including the unscientific, unnecessary and cruel eradication of 80% of the island’s robust cormorant colony, is now on the table.

Insidiously proposed as a conservation strategy, this process will negatively impact on the natural evolution of Middle Island in an effort to maintain and control it in a static and artificial state. Culling of cormorants has been found to be extremely costly and ineffective over the long term.

We, the undersigned, formally request that Middle Island be left as a natural refuge subject to natural processes and that naturally occurring wildlife not be killed, managed or disrupted in any way.
