Whether the music he creates is soaked in reggae-roots or dipped in a Louisiana slow-cooker, singer-songwriter Paul Cargello delivers a sound that surprises and appeals with each offering. He has grown to become one of Montréal’s favorite prolific troubadors.

What music are you listening to / art are you checking out these days?

Some new: Nomadic Massive, Caracol, Karma Atchykakah.

Some old: The Clash, Digeable Planets, The Goats, & Billy Bragg.

Why should people, especially youth, vote?

If we don't vote, the Conservatives and Liberals will continue to win by default. The voting age should be dropped to sixteen, so the parties wouldn't just be pandering to the older (and more right-wing) Canadians. Usually, youth means newer and more progressive ideas.

Why should people, especially youth, vote?

For you, is there a connection between art and democracy? What is it?

Voting is a lot like art in my opinion. If it really mattered, no one would let you do it. But I feel it's important to contribute, no matter how minor it may seem. Parliamentary Democracy is not the best political system in the world, and it's the one we've got to live with for now, so I supplement my political contribution to the world by singing about revolution.

Why should one care about their community? Why do you?

In every society we don't just live as individuals, we must also live together. I feel the collective need is potentially even more important than the individual need. We owe a lot to our communities, and we should always try to give back whenever possible.

I care about my community because i am the product of it . I am also actively engaged in my community, it simply wouldn't make sense to me to ignore the others i share my life with.

What do you look for in a politician? What do you expect from your Member of Parliament?

Anyone who prioratizes women's rights, queer rights, opening immigration, the environment, and eliminating poverty, is cool with me. I really don't like it when politicians have a religious bias, or diss medicare either. I hate pro-lifers. I love wealth distribution.

I don't expect much from my particular member of parliment, because i never vote for them (I vote for people that never win), but in theory they should represent my community's interest. My community and I do not want politicians sitting on their asses.

What are one or two simple actions you recommend youth take to make a difference?

Go to protests that you believe in. Don't be afraid to get arrested. Challenge your parents, teachers and government. Make your voice heard in all situations, because if you don't, no one will care about you. That's democracy.
