10 Reasons to Become Politically Involved
by Apathy is Boring Intern Patrick Burkhard — August 1, 2007
1. Become an Agent of Change
Ever heard the expression “be the change you want to see in this world” – well it is time to put your money where your mouth is. Being involved politically is the next step after becoming politically conscious or aware. Many classical philosophers and theorists would argue that it is your duty to become politically involved – ancient Rome was a city of politics where social life was itself political. Now I am not telling you it is your duty, but I do believe everyone should be politically or socially active – because we are all members of this society, so we should all do our part.
2. Tired of People Representing You? Represent Yourself
Problems with authority figures in high school? Never liked the idea of electing representatives to speak for you? Then start becoming politically active and assert your own will. Speak your mind and maybe others will follow your lead.
3. You Will Meet Cool People who are Just like You
If you get involved, whatever the avenue, you will surely meet and interact with exciting and interesting individuals. What's more is that given that you are working on the same issue or problem, you probably share a similar value base and may have a lot in common with those you work with. This means you get to find out about cool and new bands/movies/theatre or whatever else you are into.
4. Political Involvement = Political Learning
As long as you enter into the social realm with an open mind, you will continue to further both your political and social knowledge through dialogue and an exchange of ideas with others. Be sure to keep an open mind though, dogmatism is not welcomed by many.
5. It is Rewarding
Speaking one's mind and standing up for oneself is very rewarding. It inspires a sense of empowerment and confidence that can only be matched by years of intense psychotherapy. So go out there and get some!
6. We are Social Animals, Whether You Believe it or Not
Despite what our modern, individualistic society has instilled in us youth, existence does not only entail working your 9-5 job then coming home to your solitary apartment to watch tv or play videogames online for 9 hours straight. We are social beings meant to live and interact with each other. Yes, the internet is great and brings people together; however we kids these days are losing every ounce of social skill we have. Without a keyboard, we can’t have a conversation! Being active doesn’t always have to involve taking down the system. It can be as simple as taking part in a party meeting or volunteering in a community group.
7. Youth Need More Political Representation
Youth are underrepresented all across the board in all sites of vested power – meaning people who actually have decision making powers. That means youth need to get out there and show that we want our voices heard. We are not voting and not joining political parties. If we don’t show those in power that we can’t be pushed around and that we do actually care about things, how are they ever going to listen?
8. Actions Speak Louder then Words
That’s right, it’s true. Ever tried to listen to a word? Nothing, I swear. So get out there and voice your opinion through your action. The couch will still be there when you get back!
9. You’ll be the Envy of all Your Friends
Let’s face it – boring people suck. If you are not out there challenging yourself and your views, what are you doing? There is nothing worse then seeing an old friend after years apart and asking, “what’s new” and getting the old “nothing” response back. BORING! People who do things are fun. People who sit on couches suck.
10. If We Don’t Reverse the Negative Trend Now, our Future is in Peril
This can be pretty much summed up as the grand point of everything that has been said here. There is a negative trend when it comes to youth political and social participation. People are becoming more individualistic. No one knows their neighbour anymore. It is only going to get worse unless we reverse these trends. This will lead to a very scary society in the future if we lose our sense of community and society. Taking action, in any form, will help counter this!
