How To: Donate
by Apathy is Boring — March 26, 2010
Donating money is a great way to help support a cause or an organization. Many NGOs rely on donations from individuals to keep them afloat. You can also donate for entirely selfish reasons - an organization may be helping someone you know, or you may just want a tax break. Whatever your reasoning, this article will help you make a donation.
If you're having a hard time finding an organization to donate to, there are several websites that can help you. CharityVillage.com, for instance, is a Canadian website that lists all sorts of organizations that need your help, sorted into easy to browse categories. CanadaHelps.org is another site that makes the process incredibly simple: you just browse or search their list of charities, choose an organization, and donate on the spot. You can also set up a monthly donation or buy a donation gift card to give as a present for someone else to use on the CanadaHelps website. And don't forget about other organizations, such as political parties or advocacy groups, that you may want to support.
How Much to Give
Did you know that youth between the ages of 15 and 24 are the least likely to donate to charity? Don't be a statistic - plan your generosity when making your personal budget by setting aside a percentage of your income. Set a reasonable goal, such as donating 5% of what you take home from a paycheque. It all adds up, and the sooner we begin to help out those in need, the sooner we can help them overcome any problems.
Donating money is an easy and rewarding way to give back to society. Do some research and find an organization you really want to support. Give what you can, even if it's not much, because every little bit helps and you'll be surprised how good it makes you feel.
