Am I eligible to vote?

In order to vote in an Manitoba provincial election, you must be:
  • 18 years of age or older on election day;
  • A Canadian citizen;
  • A resident of Manitoba for at least six months before election day (you're still eligible if you're temporarily living outside of the province).

Am I registered to vote?

During the summer, enumerators will visit most homes to register people for the upcoming election. If you weren't visited by an enumerator, you can still vote in the election. There are two ways to register:

  • Register at the polls. You can register when you show up to vote on election day or an advance polling day. To register at the polls, you will need to show ID that proves your name and current address.
  • Register in advance. You can also register before election day by contacting your local returning officer. You can get their contact information from Elections Manitoba.

Where and when can I vote on election day?

You can find your polling station for advance or regular polling here. Your Notice of Registration will also list the location of your local polling station.

Election day in Manitoba is October 4, 2011, and polls are open from 7am to 8pm.

What ID do I need to vote?

No ID is required to cast your ballot on election day. However, if you aren't already registered, you will have to show ID with your name, photo, and current address.

What if I can't make it to a polling station on election day?

Don't worry - you can still vote during advance polling or by mailing in a special ballot.

Advance polls are just like voting on election day, just earlier. They're open every day from September 25 to October 1, from 8am to 8pm (6pm on Sunday).You can vote at any advance polling station in the province, and the locations are available here.You will need to bring ID that proves you name and address to vote.

If you can’t make it out on either election day or the advance polling days, a special ballot allows you to vote by mail. The final deadline to apply for a special ballot is October 1st, but you should try to send in your application before September 23rd - otherwise you may not get your ballot in time. You can apply for a special ballot using the form available here.

What if I’m working on election day?

Your employer has to give you three consecutive hours off while the polls are open (between 7am and 8pm). Just remember that this rule doesn’t apply to you if polling stations are open for three hours before or after your shift.

What if I'm living abroad or won't be in my riding during the election?

You can still vote by mailing in a special ballot.

What if I’m a student living away from home?

You have several options if you are away at college or university:
  • If you're going to school in Manitoba, where you vote depends on the length of your post-secondary program. If you're enrolled in a program that lasts less than six months, you vote in your home riding. However, if your program lasts longer than six months, you vote in the riding where you currently live.
  • If you're going to school outside of Manitoba, you can vote by mail by requesting a special ballot.

What if I changed addresses recently?

You can update your registration by contacting your returning office through Elections Manitoba or when you go to vote on election day.

Where do I vote if I'm homeless?

You are eligible to vote in the riding where your shelter or hostel is located. When you go to vote, you will be asked to make a sworn statement that this is your place of residence.

Where can I learn more about the different parties?

Elections Manitoba has a list of all registered parties in the province.

Where can I get more information about voting?

You can get more information and assistance from Elections Manitoba .

What are some important dates?

Advance polls are open from Saturday, September 24 to Saturday, October 1, every day 8am to 8pm (6pm on Sunday).

Special ballot applications are available from Thursday, September 23 and will not be processed after October 1. You must return your ballot by 8pm on October 4 for your vote to be counted.
