Am I eligible to vote?

In order to vote in a Newfoundland and Labrador provincial election, you must be:
  • 18 years of age or older on election day;
  • A Canadian citizen;
  • A permanent resident of Newfoundland or Labrador (you're still eligible if you're temporarily living outside of the province).

Am I registered to vote?

Elections Newfoundland and Labrador continuously updates the province's voters list. You can check to see if you're on the list by calling them at 1-877-729-7987.

If you haven't received a Notice of Registration, you can still vote in the election. There are two ways to register:
  • Register at the polls. You can register when you show up to vote on election day or an advance polling day. To register at the polls, bring ID that has your name, signature, and current address.
  • Register in advance. You can also register before the writ drops (September 19) by contacting Elections Newfoundland and Labrador. The application to be added to the voter's list is available on their website.

Where and when can I vote on election day?

You can find your polling station for advance or regular polling here.

Election day is October 11, 2011, and polls are open from 8am to 8pm NDT. .

What ID do I need to vote?

No ID is required to cast your ballot on election day. However, if you aren't already registered, you will have to show ID with your name, signature, and current address.

What if I can't make it to a polling station on election day?

Don't worry - you can still vote during advance polling or by mailing in a special ballot.

Advance polls are just like voting on election day, just earlier. They will be open on Tuesday, October 4 from 8am to 8pm NDT. You can find the location of your advance polling station here.

If you can’t make it out on either election day or the advance polling day, a special ballot allows you to vote by mail. The final deadline to apply for a special ballot is 6pm NDT on October 4, and ballots have to be returned by the next day. You can apply for a special ballot by contacting Elections Newfoundland and Labrador.

What if I’m working on election day?

Your employer has to give you four hours off while the polls are open (between 8am and 8pm). Just remember that this rule doesn’t apply to you if polling stations are open for four hours before or after your shift.

What if I'm living abroad or won't be in my riding during the election?

You can still vote by mailing in a special ballot.

What if I’m a student living away from home?

You have two options if you are away at college or university:
  • If you're going to school in the province, where you vote depends on your plans after graduation. If you plan to move back home after graduating studies, you should vote in your home riding. If you don't plan to return home, or if you aren't sure where you'll go after graduating, you should vote in the riding where you currently live.
  • If you're going to school outside of Newfoundland and Labrador, you can vote by mail by requesting a special ballot.

What if I changed addresses recently?

You can update your registration by contacting Elections Newfoundland and Labrador at 1-877-729-7987.

Where can I get more information about voting?
