Am I eligible to vote?

In order to vote in a Prince Edward Island provincial election, you must be:
  • 18 years of age or older on election day;
  • A Canadian citizen;
  • A resident of Prince Edward Island for at least six months before the election writ is dropped (September 6).

Am I registered to vote?

In early September, enumerators will visit most homes to register people for the upcoming election. If you weren't visited by an enumerator, you can still vote in the election.

There are two ways to register:
  • Register at the polls. You can register when you show up to vote on election day. To register at the polls, you will have to swear an oath.
  • Register in advance. You can also register before election day by contacting your local returning officer. You can get their contact information from Elections PEI Island . The registration period runs from September 16 to 18.

Where and when can I vote on election day?

You can find your polling station for advance or regular polling here.

Election day is October 3, 2011, and polls are open from 9am to 7pm.

What ID do I need to vote?

No ID is required to cast your ballot on election day.

What if I can't make it to a polling station on election day?

Don't worry - you can still vote during advance polling day or by mailing in a special ballot.

Advance polls are just like voting on election day, just earlier. They will be open on September 24th, 26th and 30th from 9am to 7pm. You can find the location of your advance polling station here.

If you can’t make it out on either election day or the advance polling days, a special ballot allows you to vote by mail. The deadline to apply for a special ballot is 6pm on September 20, and ballots have to be returned by 12pm (noon) on October 3. You can apply for a special ballot by contacting Elections PEI.

What if I’m working on election day?

Your employer has to give you one hour off while the polls are open (between 9am and 7pm). Just remember that this rule doesn’t apply to you if polling stations are open for one hour before or after your shift.

What if I'm living abroad or won't be in my riding during the election?

You can still vote by mailing in a special ballot.

What if I’m a student living away from home?

You have two options if you are away at college or university:
  • If you're going to school in Prince Edward Island, you can either vote in the riding where you're living on election day, or you can vote in your home riding. For example, if you're from Cornwall and going to school in Charlottetown, you can register to vote in either riding. Of course, if you decide to vote in your home riding, you may also need to apply for a special ballot.
  • If you're going to school outside of Prince Edward Island, you can vote by mail by requesting a special ballot.

What if I changed addresses recently?

You can update your registration before September 18 by contacting Elections PEI or when you go to vote on election day.

Where do I vote if I'm homeless?

You are eligible to vote in the riding where your shelter or hostel is located.

Where can I learn more about the different parties?

Elections PEI has a list of all registered parties in the province.

Where can I get more information about voting?

You can get more information and assistance from Elections PEI.

What are some important dates?

Election day is October 3, and polls are open from 9am to 7pm..

Advance polls are open on September 24, 26, and 30 from 9am to 7pm.

Special ballot applications must be submitted by September 20 at 6pm. You must return your ballot by 12pm (noon) on October 3 for your vote to be counted.
