History:
The Parti Québécois was originally created in 1968 with the intention of obtaining political, economic and social independence for the province of Quebec. When the Rassemblement pour L’independence nationale ended, members were invited to join the PQ. In 1976 the party’s leader René Lévesque became the premier of Quebec. The PQ is closely affiliated with the Bloc Quebecois and has been know to share candidates with them.
Key Principles:
-Protection of the French language
-Quebec’s independence from Canada
-Strong focus on socialism
Sovereignty:
Main objective is to make Quebec into it’s own country. Believes that in doing this Quebec will have a better future, control over it’s best interests and be better satisfied. The idea is that Quebec must become a nation in order to ‘Advance’.
Economy:
An action plan set up to protect and help local workers and businesses to ensure that Quebec finances aren’t harmed or faced with possible negative consequences of global economy.
Environment:
Plans to simultaneously improve the quality of our natural environment while creating employment through a ‘Green Economy’. Strong focus on renewable energy, as well as the protection of water and our forests.
Healthcare:
Would like to implement a system to better improve the public health system so that Quebecers have universal access to quality care in a timely fashion.
Education:
Believes that making education a strong priority will make Quebec itself stronger, especially in such competitive times.
