Elizabeth May of the Green Party will be allowed to participate in the next televised debate! I wouldn't have expected a federal candidate's participation in such an event to become a national headline, but considering the intolerant attitude of some of the other candidates who threatened to boycott the televised event if May was present, this is clearly an example of existing democracy. While the opposition, including the ever-humble Stephen Harper maintains that having Elizabeth May included in the debate is unreasonable because it would be like having two Liberal representatives present, Layton has saved face by saying he doesn't want to waste time "Debating about the debate". In any case, this entire ordeal has really gotten Canadians thinking: Should all federal candidates be included in televised debates? Is it undemocratic if they aren't, and as the Liberals are concerned, is it reasonable to have two parties with similar platforms debate?
