BLOG: The Minority Report

While the USA election tends to overshadow our Canadian election, the debate between which Democratic candidate would go further sparked intense controversy concerning race and gender. With Obama beating Hilary, some people credit it to his race, others his spirit, and some darkly pessimistic people say it shows the preference of one minority over another and that people would rather have a black man run the country than a woman.
Obviously outrageously controversial and an unnecessary claim, I looked into our own politics - with the liberals having an outstanding number of women in their ridings and general claims of sexism towards Green Party leader Elizabeth May. Looking back in history, I noticed racial exclusion from election laws (1948) much earlier than women in every province were allowed to vote (Quebec, 1940). Does this mean anything? Do we have a history or pattern of choosing one minority over another?
