Harper likely to make cameo at G20 'sherpas' meeting
by CTV — March 17, 2010
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Stephen Harper is expected to make an unusual cameo appearance at a key meeting of G20 "sherpas" this week in a bid to bolster Canada's agenda for the big summit in June.
Top negotiators -- known as sherpas -- from each of the G20 countries will be in Ottawa on Thursday and Friday to shape the agenda for the Toronto summit.
It's highly unusual for a leader to attend such meetings, which are usually secretive, but a few words from the prime minister could go a long way toward defining Canada's hopes for the summit.
Officials said Harper's attendance is not yet confirmed.
Above all, Canada wants to see countries commit firmly to stimulus exit strategies in the coming year, after finishing up their massive stimulus programs in the wake of the global financial crisis. The aim is to avoid another wave of crisis caused by mounting debt.
