Singer-songwriter Dan Goldman grew up in Montreal and moved to Toronto in 1998 shortly after graduating from Concordia University's Jazz program, where he studied mainly under guitarist and composer, Roddy Ellias. Shortly after relocating to Toronto, Dan headed-up kitchenmusik, an experimental chamber-pop group for which he was the principal songwriter. Dan also played guitar and sang mainly in the bands of Mia Sheard, Justin Haynes and Rob Piilonen – all of whom had a major impact on Dan’s writing and improvisation skills.

In spring of 2004, Dan released his self-produced debut CD entitled Through a Revolution, a collection of songs, which featured Haynes, Sheard Owen Pallett, and Susanna Hood, among others. Since its release, the album has garnered many a fan and generated critical praise nation-wide. The Globe and Mail called it “inventive, witty and intimate;” Hamilton's View magazine said that “Through a Revolution collects ten masterfully-built little ditties...” and demonstrates “songwriting at its finest;” while Calgary's Fast Forward writes that the recording “lulls the listener into a gentle state of musical bliss..."

Dan has composed scores for the Corpus Dance Company and for the Toronto Dance Theatre, as well as engineering and producing recordings for Snowblink, Breaking Sounds and Jack Breakfast. He’s toured the UK, Ireland and Canada with Mia Sheard; across Canada several times and the US both solo and with his musical partner, Snowblink; he's performed on numerous recordings by artists such as Veda Hille, Mia Sheard, Beyond The Pale, and has shared stages with kindred spirits Veda Hille, Kurt Swinghammer, Bob Snider, Martin Tielli, John Southworth, Great Aunt Ida, and Snailhouse. Dan has recently finished recording a CD of new songs featuring the St.Kitts string quartet arranged by Owen Pallett, as well as special guests Ryan Driver, and Snowblink.

What music are you listening to / art are you checking out these days?

Radiohead's In Rainbows, Sandro Perri's Tiny Mirrors, Veda Hille's forthcoming record entitled This Riot Life and Snowblink's forthcoming record entitled Long Live.

Why should people, especially youth, vote?

Voting is a way of keeping politicians accountable to their constituents. If we didn't vote, politicians would get the idea that there are no repercussions to their actions. We need to flex our democratic muscles once in a while in order to make sure that they don't get weak, which would result in other people, potentially people with solely self-interested motives, making important decisions about the environment, healthcare, housing, and arts funding, without our consent.

For you, is there a connection between art and democracy?

What is it? The connection is clear to me. Without democracy there can be no artistic freedom. Dictators who are threatened by art, which they may construe as subversive, usually ban all such art and most things that even appear to be threatening to their power. So a strong democracy affords freedom of speech as expressed through art. On the other hand, strong art helps to sustain strong democracies because it stimulates dialogue.

Why do you care about community, when it is so easy not to?

My body, my domicile and my community are all things related to my overall well being. If one is sick, then the others suffer, as well. It's never easy not to care, but sometimes we get overwhelmed and forget to feed our bodies, keep our places in good repair and contribute to our communities. Good role models, including good political leadership can potentially help to bring us to our senses in all three regards.    What do you look for in a politician? What do you expect from your MP? Honesty. Integrity. A core belief in fundamental values including a high degree of concern for the environment, health care, rehabilitation and housing programs for the mentally disabled and homeless, gay rights, aboriginal rights, a compassionate foreign policy, pacifists, guts to stand up to the current US administration, and arts funding.
