What music are you listening to these days?
Green Velvet, Switch, Junior Boys, and of course Gnarls Barkley. Oh and – randomly – I got on a Joe Williams kick for some reason earlier this year. Guilty pop pleasure: Me & You by Cassie.
Why should people, especially youth, vote?
I’m a great example of someone who, until a few years ago, felt intimidated by the process of voting. Being first and foremost someone with a creative mindset, I didn’t feel that I was informed enough about the issues to make Big Political Decisions. After a while I realized that by not voting I was forfeiting my right to demand action or change on issues that directly affect me. Since the first election I took part in, I’ve gradually been able to make choices that I feel are more informed because I’ve developed a hunger to understand the issues and what specific politicians stand for.
For those who feel the way I used to feel, I think it’s important to realize that no one person can ever be completely informed about all of the issues, and that it’s important to just jump in and vote. Once you’ve started, it flows. Having that investment in the direction of the country is addictive!
For you, is there a connection between music and democracy? What is it?
Music, at its best, is a forum to express personal ideas, opinions and feelings…it’s one of the best expressions of democracy I can think of!
What do you look for in a politician? What do you expect from your MP?
I trust my instincts in terms of whether I think a politician is genuine and sincere, and whether I sense a hidden agenda or see them hedging on an issue. I look for progressive views and a sort of realistic positivity. I expect my MP to accurately represent the views of the constituents and also to be responsive to the individual concerns of constituents....
