Interview

What music are you listening to / art are you checking out these days?

Anything I haven’t heard of before...(I'm a fiend!!!!) but I have standards like, any traditional American(all of the Americas!!!!!) roots music and its modern interpretations that is also informed by other styles and genres. Revisiting my hip hop classics as well as albums I didn't think I liked. In terms of art, I have to say the best visual art I’ve been seeing lately is political satirical cartoon art coming out of the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s. A really amazing cartoonist was a guy named Aislin from Montreal. He used to work for the Gazette.

Why should people, especially youth, vote?

My parents are from Argentina. I’m 27 years old, and my mother got to vote for the first time when she was 27. Maybe that will help put things into perspective.

For you, is there a connection between art and democracy? What is it?

Expression and the freedom to express yourself are inextricably linked, therefore it would be wise  not take that luxury for granted. There are places in the world where it could cost your life to express yourself.

Why do you care about community when it is so easy not to?

I was fortunate to be raised by two wonderful people. My dad works in development, and my mom is a career social worker. It’s in the genes, but even then, it’s easy to get discouraged. I think the most important thing for me is that I’m really interested in touching base with people, especially youth, to share life lessons that I was lucky to learn, and that many of my peers didn’t have. Working in and for local communities reminds you of that.

What do you look for in a politician? What do you expect from your MP?

Common sense. Political climate aside, little demonstrations of how you can effectively go against the grain and achieve positive results are also something I look for.
