Democracy Theatre Community Organizing Course

June 12th-14th, 2009
For: Educators, Community Workers, Social Workers, Therapists, Students,
Actors Activists and Global Citizens
Learn to use theatre for public awareness, visionning, action planning, community
organizing, conflict resolution, activism and public awareness.

The Democracy Theatre Community Organizing Course an experiential course that teaches students "theatre of the oppressed" techniques, recognized by the United Nations as "an official tool for social change" The techniques are used for public awareness, dialogue between groups in conflict, conflict resolution, visioning, strategic planning and activism. By practicing particular techniques such as forum theatre, invisible theatre and street theatre, course participants will have an opportunity to see how these
techniques can be meaningful paths towards social change. The course is based on techniques developed by Augusto Boal, a Brazilian human rights worker, politician and dramaturge. Jessica had the opportunity to study with Augusto Boal, who passed away May 2nd, 2009.

No Experience Necessary -Experience Welcome

Course Instructor, Jessica Bleuer, M.Ed has facilitated theatre of the oppressed workshops and programs in over 20 different community centres,
not-for-profits, high schools, universities, and peace camps for ethnic groups in conflict in Canada, USA, Northern Ireland, Argentina and South
Korea. Jessica has taught this course annually since 2004 at The University of Toronto's Transformative Learning Centre?s Summer Institute.
