Every year in the factory towns of China, the same dramatic ritual takes place: millions of migrant workers fight for space on overcrowded trains, trying to return home for the Chinese New Year. The Zhang family has lived this way for twenty years. They barely know their own children, who are being raised by relatives back in their ancestral village. This year, the tenuous family model has broken down, and they travel with additional purpose: they must bring home their runaway teenage daughter so that she can return to school, and not have to spend the rest of her life in a factory.

En Chine, chaque année, le même rituel dramatique se produit. Dans les villes usines du Sud, des millions de travailleurs migratoires se battent pour une place dans des trains bondés de monde. Ils essaient tous de rentrer dans leurs villages pour le Nouvel an chinois. Madame et Monsieur Zhang vivent ainsi depuis une vingtaine d'années. Ils connaissent à peine leurs enfants qui ont été élevés par les grands-parents restés au village. Cette année, la fragile cellule familiale s'est effondrée et les Zhang voyagent avec un autre but en tête : ramener à la maison leur adolescente fugueuse afin qu'elle retourne à l'école et qu'elle n'ait pas à passer le reste de sa vie dans une usine.
