Job Description

Founded in 2004, Apathy is Boring is a national, youth-led, non-partisan, charitable organization that supports our peers in being active citizens in Canada’s democracy. Apathy is Boring supports youth to make a difference in the civic life of our communities through both political and non-political processes. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Research and Evaluations Lead will be responsible for leading Apathy is Boring’s research initiatives, working with academic partners and other stakeholders to evaluate field experiments, conduct surveys and interviews as well as writing reports. The Lead will keep up to date on the latest research in the field of youth civic and political engagement and contribute to building educational resources for Apathy is Boring’s various programs. The Lead will additionally be responsible for evaluating program and project impact as well as creating and maintaining a metrics plan.

Research 40%:

  • Maintain knowledge of latest research on civic and political engagement among youth

  • Write and publish research reports

  • Write blog posts and articles sharing findings in an accessible format

  • Work with academics and Apathy is Boring’s advisory Council

  • Track elections, federal, provincial, territorial and municipal across the country

  • Gather and provide the content for education materials for programs and projects

Evaluation 35%:

  • Collaborate with the Programs Manager to develop evaluation plan for each project and program

  • Through both qualitative and quantitative methods collect data on projects and programs (surveys, interviews, focus groups)

  • Track project and program metrics

  • Analyze and write reports sharing timely feedback

Project Management 20%:

 

  • Collaborate with the Program Manager and Communications Manager to develop resources for programs and projects

  • Manage relationships as needed with sponsors, partner organizations and volunteers

  • Take part in weekly check-ins with the Executive Director

  • Support the Executive Director as needed with reporting and sharing impact with funders and stakeholders

 

Admin 5%

  • Ensure the achievement of expected timelines and deliverables, and the efficient use of human and practical resources

  • Maintain organized research database

  • Maintain contacts database

Skills/experience:

  • Master’s Degree or Honours BA in Political Science or related field;

  • Experience researching and writing reports and academic papers; 

  • Experience with research design and developing survey questionnaires;

  • Experience and demonstrated knowledge of advanced statistical analysis and quantitative research is mandatory. Knowledge of SPSS or equivalent software will be considered an asset;

  • Experience writing educational materials an asset;

  • Experience in project & client management;

  • Bilingual in written and spoken French and English;

  • Knowledge of academic databases and research tools (i.e. Mendeley) ;

  • Experience in working with volunteers or in a management capacity is an asset;

  • Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint);

  • Strong knowledge of and interest in Canadian politics and democracy;

  • Strong interest in youth electoral engagement;

  • Knowledge of the NGO sector in Canada an asset;

  • Patient and flexible with the ability to take initiative and to work independently;

  • Excellent attention to detail and proven track record of accuracy;

  • High personal integrity, honesty and professional standards; and

  • A sense of humour, quick wit, and positive attitude.
