The Cause

Founded in 2004, Apathy is Boring is a national, youth-led, non-partisan, charitable organization that uses creative methods to educate youth about democracy and community engagement, with the aim of increasing youth voter turnout, increasing youth engagement in the democratic process and building a sustainable dialogue between youth and decision makers. 

Job Description

Working virtually with the Apathy is Boring team in Montreal, the Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for organizing and assisting 20 street teams initiatives to register youth to vote in Calgary while supporting a team of five volunteers throughout the months of February to October 2018. Supported by and in partnership with Elections Alberta, the objective of this initiative is to engage the community sector across Alberta in better supporting 18-30 year olds in electoral participation. This includes, but is not limited to: organizing events for youth between the ages of 18 to 30 years old, building sustainable relationships with participants, community members and Apathy is Boring staff, conducting a robust youth registration drive, compiling data and feedback forms, and synthesizing findings towards the production of a final report for dissemination with project stakeholders.

Event Planning and Registration drive 60%:

  • Organize 20 street team initiatives for youth between the ages of 18 and 30
  • Recruitment, training and management of 5 street team volunteers
  • Oversee and manage logistics during events 
  • Assist in design and construction of registration drive materials 
  • Collect self-assessment information after every event and present content prepared by Apathy is Boring and Elections Alberta
  • Build relationships with new organizations and foster relationships with ones
  • Update contact management database
  • Perform other related duties as informed by Program Manager
  • Attend required training sessions
  • Weekly check-ins with Program Manager

Community Outreach 30%:

  • Engage with a diverse group of community organizations and community initiatives that reach an audience of 18-30 year olds
  • Gather feedback from local community participants on materials developed for electoral mobilization 
  • Maintain ongoing communication with community agencies and initiatives throughout the project
  • Project Management 5%: 
  • Submit monthly activity reports to Programs Manager for review 
  • Engage in weekly calls with Apathy is Boring team over video conference
  • Ensure the achievement of expected timelines and deliverables, and the efficient use of human and practical resources 
  • Track project impact measurement metrics

Budget Management 5%:

  • Adhere to financial guidelines and procedures set by Apathy is Boring
  • Implement and maintain the program budget


  • Post-secondary education in Political Science, Journalism, Communications, Non-Profit Management or related field (ongoing or completed)
  • Excellent communication skills including verbal, written and presentation skills  
  • Well developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with organizational staff and participants 
  • Strong analytical skills with an ability to anticipate problems and develop appropriate solutions 
  • Knowledge of computer and database/spreadsheet/word processing software
  • Proven ability to work effectively both independently and in a team based environment
  • Demonstrated willingness to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities  
  • Strong multi-tasking and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of the nonprofit and arts sector is an asset
