WHY RISE?
I am always enthusiastic for opportunities to collaborate, learn and grow within new groups of likeminded individuals collectively contributing to a goal. Personal growth requires meeting new people and expanding horizons to achieve new dimensions of thought.
WHY RISE?
I joined RISE to meet, learn, and collaborate with like-minded people who want to make a difference in the community. I was itching to put myself out there again after taking a break from volunteering due to the pandemic. After reconnecting with some old friends, they encouraged me to join RISE after enjoying the experience themselves as past ambassadors. I’m excited to participate in Cohort 12 and look forward to seeing what we create together!
I am a dedicated youth advocate with a strong passion for community advocacy and initiatives. Currently. I am deeply engaged in the world of politics while embarking on my exciting journey as a first-year student studying Political Science and Economics at the University of Alberta. My ultimate aspiration is to leverage my education and experiences to become a lawyer and advocate for social justice, creating meaningful change in our society. This is why I joined the RISE program.
Sharing groundbreaking ideas and the opportunity to connect with aspiring individuals led me to join RISE. Making an impact on the community is a learning experience and a way to develop a growth mindset in helping others.

It’s important to me to make a positive impact, and I believe meaningful positive impact is best done collectively. RISE gives me the opportunity to collaborate with others to collectively help and better our community.
BUILD PROGRAM BIO
As a sociology graduate student, I applied for BUILD to apply and expand my ability to bridge the gap between knowledge and action while learning about advocacy. I want to build on the skills I developed at RISE by collaborating with others to create innovative, real-world solutions through intersectional collaboration.
GALIBA’S EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING FOCUSED ON WORKERS & ORGANIZED LABOUR:
- Attended the “Organize 4 Power” workshop series through the Edmonton District Labour Council, connected with key stakeholders and engaged in grassroots labour organizing.
- Became a Faculty Steward with her union’s Labour Relations Committee (LRC), received training from the Public Service Alliance of Canada, and joined the LRC’s network.
- As President of the student department, she is focused on rebuilding the executive team to ensure student workers are well represented within the university.
